Giovanni's Island

After Japan's defeat in World War II, the small island of Shikotan is suddenly occupied by Soviet forces and young brothers Junpei and Kanta must share their home and school with the children of Russian soldiers. Junpei forms a tentative friendship with the Soviet commander's daughter Tanya even as their families face displacement and an uncertain future. Inspired by real events, the film is a gentle and deeply sorrowful story about the innocent casualties of geopolitics.
